The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Hugh Schatz can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Condolence From: Sari Budish / Heather Tushinski
Condolence: My sister Heather and I were so sad to hear of Hugh's passing. Unfortunately, too much time has passed since that date. He will be missed.

Heather and I shared our father with Hugh - Eli Schatz.

In October 2014, Heather's youngest son, was working in orthopaedic surgery at a hospital in Barrie. Hugh visited the hospital regarding his knee issue, and my nephew recognized his last name 'Schatz'. He met with Hugh and obtained his contact information for us.

I had previously been in touch with Hugh years before, only via mail and email. We were very fortunate to connect with Hugh again in 2014, and in 2015 in person, to share stories.

When I was very young, I vividly remember Hugh coming to our house in Willowdale once in a while. On one occasion I remember he brought a very large Narwal tusk he obtained while he was in Northern Canada. I was so intrigued with it. He left it with us, and I recall seeing it on our den for quite a while.

When we visited Hugh at his condo in Gravenhurst in February 2015, I mentioned that story to him. He smiled and pointed to the left of his fireplace. I turned around, and there it was. Silly, but it brought back so many memories. I had brought him the 2 life saving medals our father received when he was much younger, and worked as a Lifeguard in Toronto, and a couple of pictures that made Hugh smile.

We will truly miss him, and hope that this note finds you all well.

Condolence: We were very shocked and saddened to learn of Hugh's passing on the Internet today. Remember some very interesting and enjoyable conversations and a few meals with Hugh when we were next door neighbours at the cottage. One of our fondest memories was in the early days when he would feed so many birds, and give us some of his bounty of Sweet Millions tomatoes. A nice neighbour and man.

Condolence: I was very sadned learning of Hugh's passing. For as long as I can remember, he is part of my memories.
Possibly the most valuable gift he shared with me, was his pizza sauce recipie. Whenever we make his world class sauce, I remember the many times he visited us through the years. Whether he was camping across Canada in his Beetle or a long overdue visit, I always appreciated his company.

Our condolences to his family and friends.

Condolence: It is with great sadness that I heard of the passing of Hughie and I am sorry that I am unable to attend his memorial. But I know that he would understand and appreciate the reason why. Like he did for over 20 years I am getting ready for the beginning of a new school year. It was his dedication to teaching and my mother's that inpired me to become a teacher. In his memory I will follow his example and be the best teacher that I can.
